“Beauty and the Beast” may be a tale as old as time, but it was recently revealed that the live-action adaptation will feature some new changes. Apparently, the Disney remake that stars Emma Watson will feature some minor deviations from the original.

Although the changes will not veer too far from the plot, film makers did give the characters’ backstories a bit of a twist. As every Disney kid would know, the father, Maurice, was the inventor in the animated movie. “We actually co-opted that for Belle,” Watson told Entertainment Weekly. “We made Belle an inventor.”

Based on the classic story, Belle simply did not fit in with the rest of the ladies who were of her same age in her village. That said, “Beauty and the Beast” film makers and Emma Watson tweaked the story a bit in order to give an explanation why that was so. Since there was never any information to explain why Belle did not fit in and was considered as a bit of an outcast, they “created a backstory for her.”

“She had invented a kind of washing machine,” added Watson. With this backstory, it somehow explains that instead of having to do laundry for herself and her father, she could just rest and make use of her free time to read instead.

One other added detail that is not in the animated feature, is the bunch of music boxes. Maurice had created some music boxes “that have to tell the story of Belle not traveling.” Because she lost her mother, Maurice, played by Kevin Kline, has become too protective of her. According to film set decorator Katie Spencer, these music boxes were added into the story to make Belle “see what she is missing,” since Maurice is too protective of her and does not allow her to travel.

Dan Stevens, who plays The Beast, also revealed that “Beauty and the Beast” will delve further into his backstory. Stevens said that the audience will “learn a little bit more about this vain, spoiled, rich kid.”
