Peter Capaldi Bids Farewell to Doctor Who

S. Turla

In the BBC's sci-fi show "Doctor Who," the main character is The Doctor, a man who never dies but "regenerates" into a new body every time he is mortally damaged. Reports have recently revealed that the show's current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, will be leaving the show by the end of 2017.

A genre-bending show, "Doctor Who" features time-travel and the Doctor's various adventures through time and space with friends the show references as his Companions. Earlier this week, Peter Capaldi ("The Thick of It," "Torchwood") broke the hearts of "Doctor Who" fans when he announced that Series 10 will be his run as the Twelfth Doctor, per BBC.

Capaldi revealed his decision to leave the show when he was being interviewed by BBC 2 Radio presenter Jo Whiley. The actor has confirmed that his last episode as The Doctor will air during December of this year. Capaldi shared that he loved working on the show.

He said, "I feel it's time to move on." Capaldi continued, "I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic programme to work on. ... It's been cosmic" The actor also had nothing but kind words for the team behind the hit BBC show. He also said that he decided to leave "Doctor Who" since he has "always been someone that did a lot of different things."

Capaldi also revealed that even though "he was asked to stay on after his contract ran out," his decision to leave the show was final. Series 10 is also lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat's last.  Moffat commented, "Like Peter, I'm facing up to leaving the best job I'll ever have, but knowing I do so in the company of the best, and kindest and cleverest of men, makes the saddest of endings a little sweeter."

According to the rumors, Ben Wishaw ("Paddington Bear," "Heart of the Sea"), Rory Kinnear ("Lennon Naked," "Quantum of Solace"), and Richard Ayoade ("The IT Crowd," "The Watch") are in the running to become the next Doctor. The Verge also revealed that "Doctor Who" Series 10 will air on BBC Once and BBC America in April this year.
