Dell Canvas 27 vs Microsoft Surface Studio: Experts Find Many Similarities But Dell Denies
Ritwik RoyThe Dell Canvas 27 is a 27-inch touch-enabled display that is meant for the artists and the creative types. The expensive new desktop computer is part Wacom Cintiq and part iMac. However, the greatest similarities are with Microsoft Surface Studio and many tech enthusiasts have called it a Microsoft Surface clone. Dell has stated that the Canvas 27 was in the works for years, much before it heard about Microsoft Surface Studio. It's a monitor that is used with a Windows 10 computer and it's not a $3,000 dollar computer like the Surface Studio.
According to Gizmodo, the Dell Canvas 27 monitor is closer to the $2,000 range and it will reportedly take advantage of all tools built into the Windows 10 Creators Update. It is also intended for Microsoft's own giant screen with touch input. This includes Dell's "totem" dial. Its functions are exactly like that of the Microsoft Surface Dial. Using the totem, users can switch between apps, change brush size, quickly zoom in and out and adjust colors. The Canvas 27 is pretty big and takes up a lot of table space.
That is why, Dell has introduced certain software tweaks including the keyboard and touch pad that appear on the screen. Thus, users don't have to make extra space on the table for keyboard and mouse. Reports have confirmed that the Dell Canvas 27 is capable of rendering 100 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, making it an ideal device for graphics artists and photographers. Dell has also chosen a matte finish over a slick glass surface so that users, when using the pen on the surface, would feel like they are writing on a piece of paper.
The Dell Canvas 27 is very much like a primary input device, at least that's what Dell would like its fans to believe. This is why the company designed the computer expecting that users will power up another traditional display. The device could be made available in March and Dell has not revealed the price of Canvas 27. Some reports have suggested a below than $1,500 price tag compared to a $3,000+ Surface Studio. Be it a Surface Studio clone or not, the Dell Canvas 27 would surely be quite a machine to work on.
