Nintendo Switch And The Future Of Microsoft And PlayStation Portable Consoles
Regin OlimberioNintendo Switch offers portability of AAA games and it is an interesting thought if Sony or Microsoft will be tempted to revive their share in the portable gaming market. Nintendo is clearly trying to revolutionize the way players perceive handheld gaming devices by offering a gaming console free from the leash of a monitor.
Both Microsoft and PlayStation have their respective attempts to conjure portable gaming devices but failed. Windows Mobile diminished into a point where gamers couldn't even remember it anymore. For PlayStation, there are few who are still big fans of the PS Vita and the PSP.
Portability is a dream and Nintendo Switch is trying to sell that dream. It falls into the conclusion that if gamers bite the idea and sales shows decently, Microsoft and PlayStation might consider competing again. There is still a room for the portable gaming ecosystem anyway, ScreenCritics stressed.
It is but proper to set the notion straight regarding portable gaming devices as well. Vita and PSP are indeed mobile but they are not consoles. On the contrary, Nintendo Switch offers a toned down version of AAA games on a tablet-like device then effectively transforms into full console when docked. Either way, the game doesn't change apart from the size of display.
Zelda, FIFA or Skyrim can run at full colors and vibrant, crisp display on 1080p TV monitors with Nintendo Switch. Undock the device and you can pick up where you've left in a nifty handheld display - no other gaming device can do such.
Using the above argument, Nintendo Switch is clearly treading uncharted waters while competitors wait it out. Microsoft even came close to saying that they love the innovation behind this console, NintendoLife reported.
Both competitors couldn't transform their current games into multi-platform as easily as the public perceives. Backwards compatibility towards portables requires a lot of research and careful planning. These in turn requires resources and investment. A sacrifice that can only be justified if the Nintendo Switch can reap positive results.
