HTC Will Make Standalone VR Device That Is Untethered To Smartphone; Plans To Shake Off 'Top End' Tag To HTC Vive
Regin OlimberioHTC is threading the idea of a new standalone virtual reality device that operates without smartphones. HTC hopes to accelerate VR's acceptability and hype up the market by swerving from the mainstream.
Sales manager Chia-lin Chang teased that the Taiwan-branded company intends to combine mobility with VR. The idea is still on the fly and HTC is in the development stage of sufficient contents before launching the device. Chang explained that the project cropped up after observations that current the HTC Vive lacks followers among mobile users.
Unfortunately, there are mysteries behind HTC's next VR rendition. Chang said that they don't intend to replace Vive yet and the new device is a completely different player. There are indications as well that it is not going to be tethered into a smartphone. However, it is puzzling how HTC is going to pull the standalone device since Chang also described it as "not a phone slapped onto a headset."
While the nature of the device is perplexing, the idea of carrying the device and ease of usage stirs the imagination. Obviously, HTC wants to create a semi-computer world where VR can be married into augmented reality or AR, AndroidPit reported. How they are going to make the technology possible still remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Chang admitted that HTC sales did not register nice numbers compared to previous financial gains. The smartphone industry remains detached to VR headsets due to several factors and HTC traced the culprit of lukewarm reception to some "side effects" of the device.
VR headsets failed to attract users due to limited content and third-party support. Secondly, all VR headsets are problematic when the user wears prescription glasses. Further, the number one drawback is the device causing headaches and motion sickness in some cases.
