‘Switched at Birth’ Season 5, Episode 4 Recap: Iris Fights Against Racism in 'Relation of Lines and Colors' [Spoilers]

S. Turla

Iris means well and speaks up against racism at her school, but she gets in trouble anyway. Find out how Iris sparked a discussion about race in "Relations of Lines and Colors," the fourth episode of "Switched at Birth" Season 5.

According to Buddy TV, in "Relations of Lines and Colors," Iris decides to do something about the racism at her school, Daphne makes a surprising revelation, and Bay is troubled about the love triangle between her and Emmett and Travis.

Bay visits Emmett since the latter asks her if they can discuss something. Emmett then tells Bay that he signed up for a photography class to "keep himself busy." He then reveals that they have an assignment to "capture a transformative experience." Emmett then asks Bay for permission if he can photograph her while she's "giving someone a tattoo."

He clarifies that he also wants Travis' permission along with Bay's, but she is not allowed to give anyone a tattoo yet. Emmett volunteers to have her ink him. Bay is worried and she consults Toby, who tells her to just be honest with Travis. As Bay is about to tell Travis about Emmett's request, she changes her mind after finding him stressing out over the regionals.

But her effort to ease Travis' stress was for nothing since he has just been replaced by Chris, a transfer student from Michigan. Unbeknownst to Travis, Bay has started inking Emmett, and the two share a tense moment. Travis then goes to apologize to Emmett, but he loses his temper when he sees the latter's tattoo and realizes what just happened.

Bay finds out that Travis saw Emmett's tattoo, and she confronts him about his "intentions" about the photography assignment. He can't answer her, and Bay tells him that as long as she and Travis are together, it's impossible for her to be friends with Emmett.

Meanwhile, the Black Student Union is vandalized by students who use cotton balls to remind the members of slavery, per Celeb Dirty Laundry. Daphne talks to the dean, and she is frustrated when the school only gives the "cotton ballers" a three-day suspension and littering tickets. Iris then tells Daphne that she and other students are staging a hunger strike until the perpetrators are expelled.

Daphne receives a threat in her car, and her father is furious. When the boy who left the message is expelled, Daphne tells Iris but the latter is upset because he is black and his punishment was harsher than the "cotton ballers." Iris confesses that she feels "unsafe" on campus, and Daphne "finally understands" what Iris means. The latter then offers to support Iris.

Before the episode ends, Travis talks to Bay about Emmett's tattoo, but he leaves before she can explain. On the other hand, Iris and her group stage a strike with a bullhorn, and the dean forbid them from camping on campus. The dean then tries to take the bullhorn, Sharee is arrested, but the group continues the strike.
