NES Classic Edition Update: Price For The Exclusive Console Is Now At Par With the Nintendo Switch
Caezar SottoThe gaming community got a surprise yesterday when Nintendo pulled the plug for the Nintendo NES Classic Edition. Not surprisingly, the value of the plug-and-play system skyrocketed to record highs.
The NES Sold As Much As $400 In Several Online Resellers
According to Kotaku, the average price for the sought after console reached a staggering $352.20 in April. The data shows a stark contrast to last month's numbers when the NES only averaged $143.73 in several online resellers.
Further research revealed that other people were able to buy the console for $400. A price that's near the retail value (accessories included) of the Nintendo Switch.
In comparison, Nintendo's newest game system retails for $430 in Ebay, while the NES Classic Edition sells within the range of $330 to $400.
Is This The End Of The NES Classic Edition?
According to Forbes contributor Paul Tassi, there is a possibility that the NES might make a return for the holiday season. In his article, he stated that Nintendo might have pulled the plug to regroup and restock the NES Classic Edition for the upcoming season.
Aside from the console's holiday resurrection, he also mentioned the possibility of the NES bogging down Nintendo's production lines. Regardless of its success, the system might have been too exhausting to keep up.
For instance, there have been many shortages in the NES Classic Edition's short lifespan. The high demand and low profit (The system retails for $60 at that time) might have forced them to stop its production.
Nintendo's Switch Virtual Console
Another likely reason for the decision might have something to do with the upcoming Switch Virtual Console. The idea is that Nintendo is worried about the NES might take the spotlight of the upcoming feature.
The company might have pulled the plug to force players to opt for the Hybrid Switch console. Although this theory is dubious, Nintendo might have learned from their experience regarding the Wii and Wii U.
Whatever the reason is, many people are hoping that this is not the end for the NES Classic Edition. Stay tuned for more updates.
