PlayStation's Mobile Games Studio Undergoes Revamp After Team Changes
Staff ReporterPlayStation's mobile division is getting a boost with the relaunch of Neon Koi, formerly Savage Game Studios. The move follows PlayStation Mobile boss Nicola Sebastiani, another high-profile figure.
Although AAA Mobile Games' plans and 10% first-party mobile release goal have yet to be met, the purpose was to increase PlayStation's mobile footprint.
Hiroki Totoki took over as CEO of games when Jim Ryan retired, adding to the chaos.
Even in the face of instability and executive departures, PlayStation has remained dedicated to growing its mobile gaming selection.
Neon Koi's transition follows the departure of three key PlayStation executives, including Nicola Sebastiani, Michail Katkoff, and Sophie Vo, earlier this year.
Mike McManus and Nadjim Adjir have stepped up to lead the rebranded studio in Berlin and Helsinki. While details about their inaugural project remain scarce, anticipation grows for the studio's upcoming reveal.
Stay tuned for updates on Neon Koi's debut venture.
Co-founder Michael Katkoff ventured into his Deconstructor of Fun business. Mike McManus and Nadjim Adjir stepped in as leaders.
The general manager, Sophie Vo, also departed for her Rise and Play consultancy. Neon Koi, focused on action games with grand narratives, continues crafting its debut PlayStation project across Helsinki and Berlin studios.
The rebrand signifies a new chapter in their journey, reflecting their values, mission, and growth, as Neon Koi aims to embody their culture and game project passions.

PlayStation Studios is at a crossroads after being acquired by Sony and Savage Game Studios. Savage Games Studios was established in 2020 by seasoned professionals who had worked for prestigious firms like Wargaming and Rockstar.
The company quickly acquired notoriety and was able to raise $4.4 million for the creation of mobile shooters.
Sony's move represents a calculated attempt to enter the mobile game market; Savage is presently developing a AAA mobile live-service action game that is not yet known.
Herman Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, emphasized innovation and commended Savage for his daring in investigating new ideas, which matched Sony's goal of growing PlayStation's user base.
The establishment of the PlayStation Studios Mobile Division guarantees a specific emphasis on mobile games, functioning independently of the console market.
In reaffirming Sony's unwavering commitment to the PlayStation community, Hulst promised the community that their mobile projects would not take the emphasis away from providing excellent narrative-driven experiences on consoles.
By 2025, Sony's PlayStation Studios Mobile division hopes to capture 20% of the market for new games on smartphones. Contrary to popular belief, the emphasis is on strategy, licensing, and support rather than creating their own games.
The distribution will manage and license PlayStation IP for internal and external game companies. The team specializes in free-to-play gaming expertise and works with leading mobile game developers to ensure high-quality releases.
While Sony has always relied on outside studios, it is now aiming to develop games with its in-house resources. Sony is well-positioned to take a calculated approach to the mobile gaming market thanks to a team that includes experienced professionals from various gaming areas, including marketing and content.
