OnePlus Rules Out 7-Year Update Support Plan, Citing Hardware Limitations
Austin JayThe amount of hardware support an operating system manufacturer provides is becoming increasingly crucial for smartphone consumers. OnePlus, on the other hand, stands out since its flagship devices receive software support for up to 7 years.
According to Kinder Liu, the head of OnePlus, the company believes that extending software updates for seven years is futile if the hardware cannot deliver a consistent user experience.
In a recent interview with a news firm, Kinder Liu argued that merely promising a lengthy period of software updates does not guarantee a consistent software experience. While some companies focus on delivering the latest Android updates to older devices, OnePlus emphasizes the importance of maintaining the fluidity and responsiveness of smartphones.
Liu contends that alongside regular software updates, the overall smoothness of the user interface is crucial for user satisfaction.
Despite meeting the requirements, such as featuring the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, substantial RAM, and ample internal storage, OnePlus devices like the OnePlus 12 might not receive software updates for as long as competitors like Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, or the Galaxy S24 models. Liu raises pertinent questions about the long-term performance of current hardware, especially considering the demanding nature of new features and design changes introduced with each software update.

Liu used a metaphor involving a sandwich to illustrate OnePlus' perspective on extended software support. While some manufacturers promise the "filling" of their phones (software) to remain suitable for seven years, Liu suggests that the "bread" (user experience) might become "moldy" after four years.
According to Liu, offering prolonged software support is meaningless if the phone's hardware cannot deliver a seamless user experience over time.
OnePlus backs its approach with stress tests conducted by TÜV SUD, ensuring the OnePlus 12 maintains its "fast and smooth" performance even after four years of use. Liu highlighted the importance of considering battery health, suggesting that competitors' seven-year software policies may not align with the longevity of the device's battery.
Liu referenced research from Counterpoint Research, which showed that Android consumers usually upgrade their devices four years after buying them, consistent with OnePlus' present software support strategy. Preorders for the OnePlus 12 are open until February 6; preorders for the OnePlus 12R are available until the device launches on February 13.
One critical aspect the OnePlus President highlighted is the impact on battery life. Smartphone batteries degrade over time, and frequent software updates can accelerate this process. Users may find their device's runtime diminishing after a few annual updates, raising concerns about the longevity of the overall user experience.
While OnePlus remains committed to its current software support strategy, providing up to five years of support for the OnePlus 12 priced at $799.99, Liu hints at the possibility of reconsideration. As battery technology improves and more capable smartphone chipsets emerge, OnePlus might explore extending the total software support timeline.
The company continues to focus on delivering exceptional value to users while maintaining a balance between software updates and hardware performance.
