A Vietnamese tech site has leaked the most detailed images of RIM's new BlackBerry L Series handset, which is due out in 2013.
The L Series is the first to feature RIM's revamped BlackBerry 10 operating system and is a full touchscreen device which the company hopes will transform its fortunes.
The gadget site, Tinhte.vn, which came to prominence when it posted early video and benchmarks of the 3rd generation iPad, got its hands on the all-touch L-Series BlackBerry 10 smartphone and gave it the full photo and video treatment.
The L-Series has many of the same aesthetic qualities seen in the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B device, with the same placement of the front speaker and microphone as well as the BlackBerry logo and the front-facing camera. It also looks as though the L-Series comes equipped with a removable 1,800 mAh battery and features the usual collection of microUSB, microHDMI and microSD slots.
The pictures and video emerged days after RIM released the 'gold SDK' for BlackBerry 10, which gives developers the tools, APIs and components they need to design apps for the new make-or-break operating system.
"We are seeing continued excitement for the BlackBerry 10 platform from leading brands across the globe. Partners want the recognition and advantage of being first-to-market on this exciting new platform," said Martyn Mallick, Vice President, Global Alliances and Business Development at RIM in a statement. "Developers see that BlackBerry 10 is designed to make it very easy to create compelling customer experiences that can lead to high adoption and engagement."
RIM, with its BlackBerry devices, was once the biggest smartphone manufacturer in the world, producing the handsets of choice for corporate and government clients around the world. However, in the face of competition from Apple's iOS and Android smartphones, it has struggled to hold onto market share.
The company is now pinning its hopes on a new generation of BlackBerry devices featuring the BlackBerry 10 operating system, led by the L Series of handsets.
The device is set to be unveiled on January 30, 2013, but there is news that investors are already responding positively.
Bloomberg reports that shares in RIM moved to a seven-month high after the Canadian company said a survey showed application developers' willingness to endorse its new BlackBerry 10 platform has more than doubled since May.
