New Apple products always create a lot of hype and spark numerous rumors, and recently the tech world has been buzzing over a purported iPhone Math.
Previous rumors indicated that Apple will launch the 5-inch beast in 2013. Now, however, rumor has it that the Cupertino giant will in fact release two 4-inch iPhones with in-cell technology this year.
DigiTimes is the source of numerous Apple rumors, some of which have turned out to be true. After reporting earlier this month that Apple is working on a low-cost iPhone with a larger screen (around 5-inches), DigiTimes has now refuted its own rumor.
In a new report on Tuesday, Jan. 22, DigiTimes said that Apple is still working on that bigger, low-cost model, but the handset will not make its debut in the second half of this year, as it has previously claimed.
"Previously it was said that Apple would release a lower-cost version of its iPhone with a bigger screen in 2013," wrote the tech site. "But the sources claimed that Apple is indeed developing an iPhone with a bigger screen, but that will not be among the models to be launched this year."
According to the updated report, the bigger iPhone will no longer launch this year because the supply of the larger display could create production issues. DigiTimes' new report follows another one from the Commercial Times (Chinese), which claimed that Apple is working on a low-cost, 4.8-inch model dubbed the iPhone Math.
Meanwhile, DigiTimes claims that Apple will introduce two new iPhone versions this year, one of which will target the mid-range market segment. Both of those models will reportedly employ in-cell touch technology.
"However, the sources noted it is still yet to be determined if Apple will have adequate supply of in-cell touch panels in 2013 for a lower-cost version of the iPhone due to mass production issues from the technology in 2012," reads DigiTimes' updated report. "The iPhone 5 took a hit in sales during 2012 as a result of poor yields for in-cell technology, but the sources are now saying those yields are improving."
iPhone shipments are expected to reach roughly 37 million units in the first quarter of this year, and the iPhone 5 is expected to account for 20 million of those units. In the second quarter of 2013, however, the iPhone 5 is expected to drop even further to roughly 18 million units.
