UPDATE (4:45 PM EST Feb. 19): According to Ars Technica, the passcode unlock issue has not been fixed with the release of iOS 6.1.2. The issue still remains and it looks like we are going to have to wait for Apple to release yet another iOS update in the very near future.
When Apple released iOS 6.1 many users began to report an increased loss of battery life after the update. Some users also reported that the arrival of iOS 6.1. also brought with it a very serious security bug. The bug allows users to bypass the iPhone's passcode lock to access the device's phone functions and contacts. Apple issued a statement that it was aware of the Exchange bug and the passcode lock bug and was already hard at work working on a fix and would release an update to iOS to fix the issues.
Many companies asked their users to hold off updating to iOS 6.1 due to the Exchange bug. The bug caused iOS 6.1 devices to continuously loop when syncing a recurring calendar meeting invitation to Microsoft Exchange, which dramatically reduced battery life due to the constant syncing.
According to MacRumors Apple appears to have fixed both the Exchange bug and the passcode lock bug with iOS 6.1.2. The 107mb update is available now OTA (over the air) and is for all iOS devices running iOS 6 except the iPad mini WiFi + Cellular model and fourth-generation iPad models.
It's unclear if Apple has addressed a bug that many iPhone 5 owners have been experiencing since upgrading their smartphones to iOS 6.1. Many iPhone 5 owners swamped Apple's online forums claiming that after updating to iOS 6.1 their iPhone 5 batteries saw a major decrease in battery life, even without syncing to Exchange. Apple has not publicly addressed the issue and it's still unclear if the issue will also be fixed with iOS 6.1.2. Please let us know in the comments if iOS 6.1.2 has fixed any issues you may have been experiencing since upgrading to iOS 6.1.
You can download iOS 6.1.2 now OTA (over the air) by opening the Settings app on your iOS device, tap General, tap software update, and you will prompted to download and install iOS 6.1.2. At this time it appears that Apple's servers are getting hit with users downloading the update. If the update doesn't appear by following the above instructions, wait a few minutes and try again, the update should then appear.
