With "High School Musical 4" already in pre-production with director Jeffrey Hornaday and screenwriter Dan Berendensen and Peter Barsocchini back on board, latest reports claimed that Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens may reprise their roles in the upcoming film.

Fans of the popular franchise rejoiced when it was announced on March 01 that the fourth installment was in development. Along with the announcement is a casting call for actors to audition as new characters for the East High Wildcats and the West High Knights.

"'High School Musical' is part of Disney Channel's DNA," Disney's President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh said in a statement. "As a way of continuing to embrace that heritage, we are excited to announce 'the start of something new'."

The eagerly anticipated fourth film will carry the official title of "High School Musical 4: Wild and Knights." It was reported that the plot would follow around a love triangle set against the East High Wildcats and their school rivalry, West High Knights.

Although it was already reported that entirely different actors will be cast for the upcoming film, many fans are as yet hoping to see Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens reunite on-screen.

According to GamenGuide, Zac Efron's Troy Bolton and Vanessa Hudgens' Gabriella Montez may appear as mentors to the new class of wildcats in "High School Musical 4." Some reports suggest actor Corbin Bleu, 27, who played Chad Danforth, could appear as the new basketball team coach.

While nothing is impossible, the claims should be taken with a grain of salt. "High School Musical 4: Wild and Knights" currently does not have an official release date, though speculations are rife that the film is slated to be released in 2017.
