'Persona 5': Atlus Faces Controversy In South Korea; Game Becomes Best-Selling 'Persona' Title In Japan At Launch
J RoseThe game may have not reached other countries yet other than Japan, but "Persona 5" is already making waves in South Korea, unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
Atlus' latest "Persona" game has caused controversy in South Korea recently. According to Kotaku, South Koreans have shown concerns over Ryuji Sakamoto's school sneakers, which apparently sports a Rising Sun Flag logo.
The said flag was used by the Imperial Japanese military during World War II, and because of this, most South Koreans and even the Chinese find the flag to be offensive. The flag is considered to be so controversial that the Japanese were warned against brandishing the flag during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, so as not to offend South Korean and Chinese people.
It's highly likely that the imagery may be tweaked for South Korean audiences before the game is launched there, but Atlus has yet to comment regarding the matter.
In other news, "Persona 5" is now the highest-selling "Persona" title at launch, with a total of 337,767 units sold on both Playstation 3 and 4 during its first week of release. This figure beats the launch sales of "Persona 4," which sold 211,967 during its launch week, according to Persona Central.
The latest "Persona" title, which was launched in Japan on Sept. 15, has also surpassed the sales records of the Playstation 1 title "Revelations: Persona," which sold a total of 391,556 units. "Persona 5" has already shipped over 550,000 digital and physical copies, Atlus has announced (via Siliconera).
To celebrate this milestone, Atlus will be releasing the swimsuit DLC earlier than scheduled, and will be available for all "Persona 5" players for free starting Oct. 5. Apart from that, a special "Catherine" themed DLC pack will also be released, which features costumes and soundtracks from Atlus' quirky puzzle game. The DLC will be free between Oct. 5 to Oct. 10, after which it can be purchased for 800 yen.
"Persona 5" will be launched in North America on Feb. 14.
