It's been months since Season 2 concluded, but "Wayward Pines" Season 3 is still in the limbo of either getting renewed or cancelled. As for the show's executives and stars, the sci-fi series might be happening. But will it air in time for summer 2017?

After Season 2 ended last July 27, many reports about the possibility of the show getting axed for the 3rd instalment due to low ratings surfaced. While "Wayward Pines" Season 2 garnered low viewership, FOX does not believe that the Season 3 will be cancelled.

As per TVLine, FOX considers airing "Wayward Pines" Season 3 some time in the future, but not the same as "Stranger Things" Season 2 premiere date in summer. Sensing that Netflix's sci-fi thrilling series and FOX's "Wayward Pines" are just in the same genre, airing in summer is definitely risky for FOX, especially if they aim for higher viewership.

If "Wayward Pines" Season 3 avoiding to compete with Netflix's sci-fi series, viewers may expect an airing date after "Stranger Things" Season 2 ended. This may also sound conducive for the show as some actors of the show have already prioritized other series, including actor Terrence Howard that still gracing on "Empire" Season 3, according to FX News Call.

Moreover, "Wayward Pines" Season 1 ratings garnered over 3.8 million viewers compared to the second season's 2.4 million. Nonetheless, Season 2 regained with the DVR ratings which helped increased the rate to 3.5 million.

As for the storyline of "Wayward Pines" Season 3 being the series finale, author Blake Crouch hopes that the latest season would stay true to the theme and the established tone. He also adds that series may have no happy ending, in an interview with Screener TV.

"I would want a real ending that is honest and would probably have some incredible poignancy and bittersweet moments. The idea of what the last episode looks like is very exciting," said by author Crouch.

Executive Producer M. Night Shyamalan and author Crouch already shared their thoughts with the CEO. The CEO admitted that the network's top executives are still deciding whether or not they will pursue "Wayward Pines" Season 3.
