‘Doctor Strange’ Star Benedict Cumberbatch Is Directly Related to ‘Sherlock Homes’ Author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The leading star Benedict Cumberbatch of "Sherlock" and "Doctor Strange" is directly relevant to the person who created his onscreen character Sherlock Holmes almost 130 years has past.

"Sherlock" was based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective tales, a crime drama television series. The two main stars of the series are Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson.

Benedict Cumberbatch is also the leading star of "Doctor Strange," which is an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character. A neurosurgeon named Doctor Stephen Strange loses the use of his hands in a car accident; the accident drove him to a journey of healing, which he explores the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

The author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the actor Benedict Cumberbatch of the Sherlock Holmes detective series are 16th cousins as discovered by the researchers of ancestry.com.

They are both related to their ancestor John of Gaunt, the liege of Lancaster, son of King Edward III of England. John of Gaunt is Benedict Cumberbatch's 17th great-grandfather and Sir Arthur Doyle's 15th great-grandfather. John of Gaunt was also a close buddy of the late poet Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the well-known "The Canterbury Tales," it indicates that writing and literature normally runs in their blood.

Benedict Cumberbatch's relation to British Royalty was proven which exposed new possibilities of genealogies, claimed by Michelle Ercanbrack a historian at ancestry.com.

"Every history of a family establishes the same way: you start with what you know. From there, you work back one generation at a time, proving each step as you go," said Michelle Ercanbrack ancestry historian.

2010 was the biggest turning point of Benedict Cumberbatch's career where he played the famous private detective with the support of Martin Freeman's Dr. John Watson in the popular BBC series.

Series 4 of 'Sherlock' was premiered on New Year's Day and will continue this coming Sunday on BBC One with three new episodes on PBS after its three years break.
