"Gotham" Season 3 is expected to take an even darker tone after its upcoming episode entitled, "Ghosts." In addition to the return of Jerome - who could potentially develop into The Joker, Penguin will also reportedly get a surprise visit from a family relative.

As seen on the teaser for the "Gotham" Season 3 midseason premiere, Penguin is visited by his father, Elijah Van Dahl, late at night. The character, portrayed once again by Paul Reubens, does not just drop in to say hello. He shows himself to his son in order to inform the latter about something very important.

According to Screen Rant, Penguin is in hiding after Nygma found out about what he did. In the show's previous episodes, it was revealed that Penguin - who is a very jealous character - killed Nygma's girlfriend, Isabella. That said, Nygma is expected to get his revenge on Penguin when "Gotham" Season 3 returns - thus, making the latter get paranoid.

The episode title, "Ghosts," is fitting, considering that two of the returning characters are supposed to be dead. Jerome is fully brought back from the dead, while Penguin's dad looks to be only returning as a delirious dream figure.

Penguin, otherwise known as Oswald Cobblepot, is played by Robin Lord Taylor. He had spoken with The Hollywood Reporter about his "Gotham" Season 3 character's recent rise to power and revealed that Penguin started to become "complacent."

"When you gain any kind of power in Gotham City, it is just there to be taken away from you," Taylor said. After Penguin was dubbed as the new leader of Gotham's crime ring, he seemed surprised when someone under his wing betrayed him - much like what he did to Fish in the series' first season.

"He built his empire on a very shaky foundation," he added. "Oswald was overly trusting in the conditioning that Butch received - never expecting that it could be reversed or changed."
