Purported Amazon smartphone leaks in first clear render, shows off design
Alexandra BurlacuAmazon is expected to push its mobile presence this year and the first image of the company's purported smartphone has now leaked online.
Rumors of an Amazon smartphone have been making rounds for quite some time, but nothing has materialized so far. Whispers started to intensify recently suggesting that the company may finally be ready to bring its first smartphone to the market, and now a leaked image allegedly shows the upcoming device.
The leaked image comes courtesy of BGR, which claims that the render was designed for Amazon's graphic designers to use internally. According to the publication, multiple sources have verified the authenticity of this render.
The image shows what Amazon may have in store for its upcoming handset, revealing some design cues apparently borrowed from popular smartphones such as Apple's iPhone, the HTC One, and Samsung's Galaxy S lineup. The render doesn't show the top panel of the purported Amazon smartphone, but it does rveal the sides and the overall design of the device. Much like Amazon's tablets, the smartphone seems to sport a simple, minimalistic design that looks clean and beautiful.
The rear panel of the purported smartphone shows the company logo in the middle, while the camera and the LED flash are located on the top-right corner. The bottom panel, meanwhile, shows a microUSB charging slot and two speaker grills. Lastly, the left side seems to feature the power button and volume rocker, as well as the SIM tray. On the software side, the smartphone appears to be running what looks like the native Amazon Store app.
BGR further points out that although the leaked render shows a large-screen smartphone, Amazon's handset is reportedly designed to be comfortable to use with one hand. Amazon is also rumored to be working on a neat gesture recognition set, and its upcoming smartphone will reportedly sport this functionality that will allow for easy one-handed use.
Amazon is expected to launch a range of smartphones, not just one handset, and BGR further claims the devices may hit commercial availability by early summer. This would imply an imminent unveiling, but Amazon has not announced anything so far. Previous whispers, meanwhile, indicated that Amazon was planning to launch its first smartphone in the second half of this year.
In terms of specifications, the highly-anticipated Amazon smartphone is rumored to sport a 4.7-inch HD display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (it remains unknown at this point which model), 2GB of RAM, and six camera modules. Similarly to the company's Kindle line of tablets, the Amazon smartphone is expected to run a highly-customized version of Android.
Keep in mind, however, that none of this is official at this point, and it remains unclear when Amazon will finally unveil its first smartphone. As always in such cases, take all leaks, rumors, and speculation with a hefty grain of salt until the official announcement.
