Google teasing Android 5.0 ahead of I/O 2014 conference?
Alexandra BurlacuGoogle seems to be doing a bit of teasing for Android 5.0 ahead of its big Google I/O conference set to take place later this month, on June 25 - 26.
The company is widely expected to make several announcements at its upcoming developer conference, tackling both hardware and software fronts. In terms of hardware, the much-rumored Google Nexus 8 tablet, purportedly made by HTC, could be the star of the show, but a new Nexus 6 smartphone is also a possibility.
Google has traditionally unveiled a new Nexus device as the launch vehicle for a new Android version, and this year is expected to be no different. The upcomming Nexus device Google is expected to unveil should run a new version of Android, which may launch as Android 5.0.
So far it has been rumored that the next version of Google's popular mobile operating system (OS) will come as v4.5, but a new company post on Twitter now suggests that it may in fact arrive as Android 5.0.
While the Twitter post doesn't tease anything concrete regarding the next Android OS, it does show a Nexus 5 running Google Now and displaying the time as 5:00 on its screen. Images previously posted in this fashion showed the time as 4:40, hinting at Android 4.4 KitKat. The timing shown on the display is a common way to offer subtle hints for teasing what's to come.
The next Android OS version should sport notable improvements over the current Android 4.4 KitKat and should debut in less than a couple of weeks. Various rumors speculated that it may be called Lollipop, keeping up with Google's habit of naming its OS versions after sweets, in alphabetical order. On the other hand, the current version of Android was rumored to launch as Key Lime Pie, and Google in fact partnered with Nestle to release the new OS as KitKat.
Nothing is concrete or confirmed at this point, but the highly-anticipated Google I/O 2014 developer conference is just around the corner. We'll get the real scoop straight from the source in less than a couple of weeks, and we'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as it's official. Stay tuned!
