Xperia Z2 to hit Verizon in mid-Q3 as Sony Sirius Viv, boast LTE-Advanced
Alexandra BurlacuThe Sony Xperia Z2 flagship smartphone has still not made an official debut in the U.S., but now we have more information about its expected launch on Verizon Wireless.
The Xperia Z2 is Sony's latest flagship smartphone and it comes packed with neat specs and features to make it worthy of the title. The handset, however, had somewhat of a rocky launch, and U.S. customers are still waiting for its arrival.
About a month and a half ago, Sony itself posted an image of the Xperia Z2 with Verizon branding, confirming that the smartphone will indeed make its way to Big Red's network in the U.S. Little else was known about its release on Verizon at that point, but now more information has surfaced.
The Verizon-bound Sony Xperia Z2 will reportedly debut on the carrier's network sometime in the middle of the third quarter, launching as the Sony Sirius Viv. The new details come from well-known and trusted tipster @evleaks, who posted the info over the weekend. While there's no guarantee that this is accurate, @evleaks has an excellent track record when it comes to the accuracy of this leak, which adds to the credibility of this information.
"Verizon customers: your wait for the Sony XPERIA Z2 will not have been in vain. The delay, if you want to call it that, is due to the fact that a very specific variant, one that supports LTE-Advanced, must wind its way through the certification and testing processes. Look for the Sony Sirius Viv (D6503) during the middle of next quarter," @evleaks revealed on Sunday, June 15.
The D6503 model number @evleaks mentions is similar to the model number GSM Z2 devices have, and the explanation for the delay seems very plausible. Verizon is notorious for its rigorous testing processes that take ages, so it would make sense for the Xperia Z2 to make a rather late debut on the carrier's network. Moreover, the Verizon Xperia Z2 is expected to boast VoLTE support when it becomes available.
On the other hand, if this information proves to be accurate and the Sony Xperia Z2 hits Verizon's network in the middle of the third quarter, it will face some fierce competition from big players on the smartphone market. Apple is widely expected to unleash its first large-screen iPhone in September, Samsung is rumored to launch a premium metal version of its current Galaxy S5 flagship, purportedly called the Galaxy F (or Galaxy S5 Prime), while Motorola will reportedly unveil its new Moto X+1 flagship. The rumor mill has also hinted at an LG G3 Prime and an HTC One M8 Prime, which may also debut around the same time.
It's all in the rumor state for now, however, so take everything with a grain of salt until official confirmation.
