iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 3 leak with Touch ID fingerprint scanners
Alexandra BurlacuApple's next-generation iPhone, iPad Air, and iPad Mini are posing for the camera with fingerprint readers on board, a newly-leaked image shows.
The company first introduced a fingerprint reader called Touch ID with its current iPhone 5S flagship, allowing for an extra layer of security and some extra functionality. The feature was controversial at first but turned out to be very popular nonetheless, and fingerprint readers have become the new must-have for high-end devices.
Consequently, it's not surprising that the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, and iPad Mini 3 are all expected to boast similar Touch ID fingerprint readers built into their home buttons, just like the iPhone 5S.
A new image has now leaked online from Taiwanese reseller Apple Club (via Mac Rumors), allegedly showing the next-generation iPhone and iPads with a Touch ID embedded circular home button.
As a reminder, Touch ID is the fingerprint scanner integrated into the home button of the current iPhone 5S flagship smartphone. So far, this fingerprint recognition tool has allowed users to unlock their device, as well as make purchases from the iTunes Store, the App Store, and the iBooks Store, but does not support third-party functionality.
With a 360-degree readability, the Touch ID allows users to scan their fingerprints in portrait, landscape, or any position, and the reader also supports multiple fingerprints.
The leaked image in question shows the purported iPhone 6 resting on top of the rumored iPad Mini 3, while the second-generation iPad Air lies at the bottom. When it comes to the highly-anticipated iPhone 6, this image seems to bolster rumors that it will sport the power button on the right side instead of at the top, likely in order to facilitate one-handed operation despite the larger display.
On the other hand, the image reveals little else about these three purported devices. The much-rumored iPhone 6 is expected to make its debut this fall, arriving in a 4.7-inch model first, with a larger 5.5-inch variant to follow afterwards. The iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 should make their debut after the iPhone 6 lands, also in the fall. Apple is also rumored to add more functionality to its Touch ID fingerprint reader, enabling PayPal support and others such.
