Microsoft officially unveils the Nokia X2 Android smartphone – All you need to know
Alexandra BurlacuMicrosoft has officially unveiled a brand new Nokia X2 dual-SIM Android handset, shaping up as a neat option for smartphone shoppers on a budget.
In fact, the new Nokia X2 seems like the budget Android smartphone Nokia should have made in the first place, instead of the initial Nokia X and XL released roughly four months ago.
The new Nokia X2 comes in the same range of colorful options we've already got accustomed to, but this time everything's shinier - literally. The handset is still made of plastic, but a glossier one.
"The Nokia X2's stylish exterior remains as bold as the original Nokia X but incorporates a brand-new cool translucent outer layer, making it really shine whatever the time of day," the company touts in a new company blog post on Tuesday, June 24.
Aside from the new design, Microsoft has also made some changes on both the hardware and the software fronts. Under the hood, the new Nokia X2 packs a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, which is a slightly higher clock speed than the X1's 1GHz.
The new smartphone further features a 5-megapixel rear camera with flash and auto focus and it also sports a front shooter, unlike the X1, allowing for video chats and self-shots. The Nokia X2 comes with a 4.3-inch display with a pixel density of 217 ppi, which would translate to a resolution of 800 x 480 - the same as the original Nokia X. The handset also comes with dual-SIM support.
On the software side, the custom Android user interface seems more in line with the Windows Phone UI. The Nokia X2 software features a dedicated Apps List page, easily accessible by swiping to the right from the home screen. Fast Lane remains unchanged save for its location, as it is now on the left. The updated Nokia Store, meanwhile, now incorporates third-party app stores for additional apps, and the Nokia X2 also boasts a bunch of Microsoft apps.
"In terms of Microsoft-made apps, Skype, Outlook.com and OneDrive with 15GB of storage are available right out of the box. Bing Search app, Yammer and Xbox games, including SnapAttack, Wordament and Kinectimals are available from the Nokia Store. The note-taking app, OneNote also makes its debut, giving people another useful way to experience cloud services," the announcement further details.
"For the socialites amongst you, LINE, WeChat, Path, Facebook and Facebook Messenger are also available."
When it comes to pricing, the new Nokia X2 is slightly more expensive than its predecessor. The smartphone will come with a €99 price tag (roughly $135) and it will become available immediately in select countries. Color options include glossy green, orange, and black at launch, with glossy yellow, white, and matte dark grey to become available afterwards.
