Android 5.0 Lollipop coming to entire Xperia Z lineup, boasts Sony
Alexandra BurlacuSony fans are in for some good news, as the company officially announced plans to update its entire Xperia Z lineup of devices to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop.
After teasing fans with Android L previews, Google finally made its latest Android 5.0 Lollipop official, boasting notable improvements on all fronts. In fact, Android 5.0 Lollipop is the most major upgrade to Google's operating system since Ice Cream Sandwich, and users worldwide are eagerly waiting for the new update to hit their devices.
As expected, Android 5.0 Lollipop debuted alongside new Nexus devices that serve as its launch vehicles. The Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player will be the first devices to launch with the latest version of Android out of the box. The update will then roll out to existing Nexus devices, such as the Nexus 5, 7, and 10, followed by Google Play Edition (GPE) devices.
Once the Nexus and GPE lineups get the update, Android 5.0 Lollipop will start its journey toward other devices. Not all smartphone manufacturers have detailed their update plans just yet, but Sony is among the few who did.
Sony has officially announced that all members of its popular Xperia Z series of devices will get an update to the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition will obviously be the first to get the treat, as it is part of the GPE lineup, with the rest of the premium Z family to follow next year.
"We'll be making Sony Mobile's Android 'L' upgrade available for the entire premium Z series: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1s, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up - we'll be back with more details on that soon," reads Sony's announcement on Thursday, Oct. 16.
"We'll start the upgrade at the beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series - continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above."
In other words, the update will not be ready to roll out this year, and we don't have an exact timeframe for when it will be, but the Xperia Z2 and Z3 series will get it early next year. Sony promised to offer more details soon, and we'll keep you up to date as soon as we hear more.
