New Moto G (2014) gets Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA update

The second-generation Moto G launched this year is apparently the very first phone to get the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop firmware update.

Google introduced its new Android 5.0 Lollipop back in mid-October, and the Nexus 6 is the first smartphone to rock the new OS out of the box. The latest version of Android was expected to roll out to existing Nexus devices before starting its journey to other devices, but things seem to be different this time.

While Nexus devices are typically the first in line to receive any new Android updates, it now seems that the Moto G 2014 is in fact the first smartphone to get the new OS (i.e. receive the update, not rock it out of the box).

Ars Technica was the first to report that the unlocked version of the new Moto G has started receiving an over-the-air (OTA) update to Android 5.0 Lollipop in the U.S. The update weighs 386.7MB and should also roll out to the new Moto X and the LG G3 soon.

News of this update rolling out already to the new Moto G in the U.S. took many by surprise, but it's not just a rumor. Motorola itself confirmed it, and even offered a changelog for the update in official release notes.

"We are excited to announce a new software update for Moto G (2nd Generation) by Motorola. This update brings Android 5.0 Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements," Motorola announced.

The update that brings Android 5.0 Lollipop to the new Moto G (2014) is version 22.11.6 and comes packed with neat features and improvements. In addition to all of the goodies Lollipop has to offer, the update also includes a few features that are specific to Motorola devices. Moto Assist, for instance, will now play nicely with Android's new "Downtime" feature, which is a "Do Not Disturb" mode. Android's new multi-user features will also work well with some apps such as the Motorola Camera, Gallery, and FM Radio, albeit Moto Assist and Moto Connect will be reserved for the master user, as it should be.

Aside from the Motorola-specific features, some of the highlights of the new OS version include Google's new Material Design user interface, lock screen notifications, and the battery life enhancements brought along by "Project Volta."
