Apple's new iOS 8.1.1 software update brings a number of bug fixes and performance improvements for older devices such as the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

The new update also improves overall stability and should fix the issues many iOS users said they faced with older Apple devices. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2, for instance, theoretically supported iOS 8.0, but the OS's higher demands caused some performance issues for the devices. This update should help make things better for those who upgraded their devices and faced sluggish performance.

The update rollout comes after two weeks of testing, as Apple first released its iOS 8.1.1 as a beta seed to developers earlier this month, on Nov. 3. The new iOS 1.1.1 is not a major upgrade, it simply comes as a minor update that adds some much-needed bug fixes and improvements.

The update is immediately available as an over-the-air (OTA) download, released on Monday, Nov. 17. At the same time, Apple also released new Apple TV software, as well as an update to OS X Yosemite, OS X 10.10.1 (see image above).

While the latest iOS update particularly aims to bring improvements to older devices, it should make a positive difference for newer iDevices as well. So far, the update doesn't seem to have or cause any issues like the previous iOS 8.0.1 and iOS 8.0.2 did.

Apple doesn't really detail just how the new iOS 8.1.1 improvements work, but iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users should see a noticeable difference in performance. In addition to overall performance and stability improvements, the new update also seems to resolve some issues users faced with iCloud Drive and apps such as iWork for iOS.

As previously mentioned, the new iOS 8.1.1 is available now as an over-the-air download. To find it, access your device's Settings > General >Software Update. From there, select the update, download it and install it on your device. Considering that it's pretty lightweight, the whole process completes in no time.
