LG is reportedly working on a hybrid device to compete with the Microsoft Pro 3, according to a new report.

The Surface Pro 3 2-in-1 convertible is Microsoft's top-tier offering and aims to replace your laptop, boasting high-end specs and features that go beyond simple tablet functionality.

If a new report turns out to be accurate, Microsoft may soon have some competition for its Surface Pro 3. Citing company insiders, CNET reports that LG is working on its own hybrid device that will serve either as a tablet or as a laptop when docked into a keyboard extension.

"LG has a new tablet with a detachable keyboard in the works that, much like Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, will function as a laptop with the keyboard attached and a laptop without," notes the publication.

The report further claims that LG's upcoming convertible will pack a fourth-generation Intel Core processor under the hood, as well as a solid state drive (SSD) for convenient portability and superior battery life. Moreover, LG is reportedly considering to equip this device with a touchpad system on the keyboard, much like the Surface Pro 3.

LG is no stranger to hybrid devices, but so far it hasn't seen much success on this segment of market. Back in February 2013, for instance, the company launched an 11.6-inch Tab-Book hybrid PC running Windows 8.1, which could serve as both a tablet and a laptop. The device came with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard under its touchscreen, activated by a button on the side of the Tab-Book.

The company then launched a new Tab-Book back in July, replacing Microsoft's Windows 8.1 OS with Google's Android 4.2. No Android upgrades were on the table, however, and the device didn't exactly fly off the shelves either.

According to CNET, LG is not quite satisfied with how its current tablet range is performing in terms of sales, as it sells arguably fewer tablets than smartphones.

"Sales records of the Tab-Book were so-so," an LG Electronics spokesperson told the publication, without making any comments on new tablet releases.

It remains unclear at this point just when this purported hybrid would hit the market, but it could help LG boost tablet sales. To compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro 3, however, this upcoming 2-in-1 convertible should come with some impressive specs and features.

As previously mentioned, LG has made no formal announcement in this regards, which means that it all remains in the rumor state for now. As always in such cases, take this report with a grain of salt.
