No Microsoft Lumia flagship until September 2015?
Alexandra BurlacuMicrosoft reportedly has no plans of launching a new Lumia flagship smartphone until September 2015, according to a new report.
Recent reports have already indicated that Microsoft plans to focus on the entry-level and mid-range segments of the smartphone market with its next handsets, but now it appears that the company will not launch any high-end device in the first half of next year.
Microsoft recently launched its Lumia 535 smartphone as the first one to come with the Microsoft Lumia branding instead of Nokia Lumia, and more devices are expected to make their debut at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2015). If a new report turns out to be accurate, however, for a good while the company will launch only smartphones with mid-range specs at best.
The news comes from Geek on Gadgets, which claims that Microsoft will not make any notable announcements at MWC 2015, which takes place in March this year.
"Unfortunately it appears that a flagship status phone will not be presented by Microsoft at their event," the publication reports, citing unnamed sources. "In fact no high end phones will be presented by Microsoft, our sources claim that Microsoft's event will mainly involve low-end phones; with the possibility of showcasing a new 6 series device, possibly a successor to the Lumia 625."
The new information falls in line with previous rumors, indicating that Microsoft will cater to the budget segment of the smartphone market in order to better compete against the slew of devices running Android. The company is said to replace the Nokia X lineup with low-end Windows Phone devices, and the latest report seems to bolster claims of such a strategy.
If Microsoft indeed has no plans to release a new flagship smartphone until later in the second half of next year, it means that the current Nokia Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 will hold on to the flagship title at least until September 2015.
It's all in the rumor state for now, however, and nothing is ever set in stone when it comes to the fast-paced smartphone market. We'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, but take all leaks, rumors and reports with a grain of salt in the meantime.
