The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are apparently slated to receive an upgrade straight to the updated Android 5.1 Lollipop, according to a new report.

Google announced its Android 5.0 Lollipop back in mid-October, and the new firmware came as the greatest upgrade to its mobile operating system since Ice Cream Sandwich. The new OS version has gradually been making its way to devices in the past few months, but most Android smartphones and tablets have yet to receive the treat.

As always, the new OS version rolled out to Nexus and Google Play Edition (GPE) devices first, while other Android smartphones and tablets should receive it in the months to come.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are both top-notch Android phablets that should receive the latest OS soon, and it now seems that both devices will skip the Android 5.0 version and go straight for the updated Android 5.0.1 Lollipop.

"Following the Galaxy S5 LTE-A (SM-906S), Samsung is in the works to update two of its premier phablets to Android 5.0.1. These devices are the Galaxy Note 4 and its rounded screen sibling, the Note Edge," SamMobile reveals in a new report. "The Android 5.0.1 update on the Galaxy S5 LTE-A holds up quite well, which is perhaps why Samsung believes its time to roll out the update for other more popular devices that we're talking about here. What this also means is that both these devices will ditch the Android 5.0 update, since we already have builds for the devices running on Android 5.0.1."

While nothing is officially confirmed at this point, it would make sense for Samsung to update its flagship phablets to the very latest Android build so users can enjoy the greatest experience Android has to offer.

Samsung, for its part, has confirmed that its flagship Galaxy Note 4 will receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but did not provide any specific timeframe for when the new OS will start rolling out. Considering the increasing leaks recently, however, it shouldn't take too long now.

On the other hand, even if Samsung starts pushing Android 5.0, or Android 5.0.1 to its devices by the end of this year, it would still take a couple of weeks for the update to roll out to all regions. Updates are always gradual and it takes a while for all approved devices to actually receive it. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, but take all unofficial news with a grain of salt in the meantime.
