Sprint announces Android 5.1 Lollipop OTA rollout for Nexus 6
Alexandra BurlacuSprint's version of the Motorola-made Google Nexus 6 is about to receive a software treat, as the carrier has announced that it started pushing Android 5.1 Lollipop.
After several hints and teasers, early this week Google officially announced the latest Android 5.1 update to Lollipop. The latest version brings some overall performance improvements and some bug fixes, but it also adds a few new features that will enhance the whole experience.
One of the new features Android 5.1 has to offer is multi-SIM support, which will allow users to use multiple SIMs as long as their device has multiple slots. This feature was particularly expected for Android One devices with dual-SIM support.
The most touted new feature, however, is called Device Protection, and aims to boost the security of your device. More specifically, in case you lose your smartphone or it gets stolen, this feature can keep it locked until you sign in with your Google account. Even if someone tries to restore the phone back to factory settings, Device Protection will still keep it locked until you enter your Google account credentials.
Sprint's support page for the Nexus 6 notes that Android 5.1 Lollipop is scheduled to start rolling out on Wednesday, March 11, and carries build number LMY47D. The update will also bring enhancements to sending MMS messages in the UK, as well as a fix that resolves the issue of sending duplicate SMS messages.
The update is rolling out over the air (OTA), which means that the process is gradual and it may take a few days to reach all devices. OTA updates always roll out in stages and not all devices get it at the same time.
AT&T and T-Mobile have yet to announce plans to roll out Android 5.1 to their versions of the Nexus 5, but should follow suit soon enough. Verizon, meanwhile, has still not started offering the handset, but is expected to start selling the Nexus 6 on March 12. The Verizon Nexus 6 will reportedly arrive with Android 5.1 on board out of the box.
In the meantime, if you have a Nexus 6 on Sprint, you should receive the new Android 5.1 update anytime now. If you already received the software, drop by our comment section and let us know how it fares. If not, rest assured that it's on its way.
