Microsoft temporarily pulls Windows 10 Technical Preview for Lumia 520 and others
Alexandra BurlacuFollowing reports of bricked devices, Microsoft has halted the availability of Windows 10 Technical Preview for the Lumia 520, Lumia 525, and Lumia 526.
The highly-anticipated Windows 10 OS aims to unify Microsoft's platforms and serve as a universal OS for phones, tablets, and PCs alike, and is expected to boast great improvements on the mobile side compared to the current Windows Phone 8.1.
Microsoft plans to make Windows 10 available on as many Windows Phone devices as possible, but the company now faces a few hurdles along the way. After releasing the Windows 10 Technical Preview for a slew of Windows Phone smartphones, Microsoft saw complaints piling up in regards to a nasty bug affecting some of its devices, including the widely popular Lumia 520.
"We are seeing some reports of failures on Lumia 520/525/526 devices when trying to roll back to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool. We are pausing build availability for these devices temporarily while we investigate the issue and work with customers who have reported problems," a Microsoft employee said in a new post on the Windows Insider forum, as Windows Central first reported.
More specifically, many owners of the aforementioned devices who installed the Windows 10 Preview reported that their phones crashed, and then bricked their devices altogether when trying to revert to Windows Phone 8.1 using the Recovery Tool.
Lumia 520 device owners were very excited at the prospect of receiving Windows 10 on their devices, but it remains to be seen how it will all pan out now. The Lumia 520 is Microsoft's best-selling Windows device ever, and not only when it comes to smartphones, so the company will likely do all it can to improve the experience. For now, however, the Windows 10 Preview is quite damaging.
Test builds of new OS versions are always risky before they're ready for public release, and those who want to be among the first to test them are always advised to avoid installing previews on their primary devices.
It remains unclear for now just when Microsoft will resume the availability of Windows 10 Technical Preview for the Lumia 520, Lumia 525, and Lumia 526, but we'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
