Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge Android 5.1 update set for June
Alexandra BurlacuThe new-generation Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge may get Android 5.1 Lollipop as soon as June, according to one carrier listing.
Samsung unveiled its latest and greatest flagships back in early March, at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, introducing the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Both handsets come with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, which was the latest version of Android at the time of their launch. In the meantime, however, Google released a newer Android 5.1 version with several bug fixes and improvements, and Samsung has to update its devices to the latest build.
Canadian carrier Rogers has now listed the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge as scheduled to receive an update to Android 5.1 Lollipop in June, which means that the OTA will start rolling out next month at least in Canada. At the same time, carrier estimates are not set in stone and dates are subject to change, as Rogers itself notes in the fine print.
Nevertheless, there's still a good chance for the latest Galaxy flagships to get Android 5.1 next month. If the update rolls out in Canada, other carriers worldwide, including the U.S., should start pushing the update around the same time. This means that Android 5.1 may hit Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge units in other markets as well soon enough, although no official information is available at this point in this regards.
Some recent rumors, meanwhile, have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge may get some neat camera improvements with the latest update, in addition to a new guest mode feature. Samsung could also find a way to address the poor RAM management issue with the rollout of Android 5.1, as plenty of Galaxy S6 users have complained about this problem although Samsung rolled out some performance improvement updates.
Rogers Canada doesn't list any specific date for when Android 5.1 will start rolling out for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in the country, as "June" is the only timeframe it mentions. If all goes according to schedule, however, more information should come to light shortly. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, so check back soon.
