Google Nexus hype: LG ‘Angler’ smartphone, Huawei ‘Bullhead’ phablet expected this year

Google is rumored to launch two new smartphones this year, made in collaboration with LG and Huawei, and more information is now available.

So far, Google has launched one new Nexus smartphone each year, teaming up with various partners for the handset. The latest Nexus 6 comes from Motorola, and marked the first time Google added a phablet to its Nexus lineup.

If recent rumors turn out to be accurate, Google will be launching two new Nexus smartphones this year - one made in collaboration with LG, and the other one with Huawei. At the same time, Google may not launch a new Nexus tablet this year.

According to a new report from Android Police, citing a reliable source, LG's upcoming Nexus is codenamed "Angler," while Huawei's offering is "Bullhead."

The LG Angler reportedly sports a 5.2-inch screen, while the Huawei Bullhead will come as a phablet with a 5.7-inch display. Apple launched an iPhone 6 smartphone and an iPhone 6 Plus phablet in 2014, and Google could be looking to launch two Nexus smartphones to go head to head with Apple's offerings on both the smartphone and phablet segments.

The exact specs of the purported LG and Huawei Nexuses remain unknown for now, but the LG Angler is rumored to pack a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor under the hood, while the Huawei Bullhead would reportedly use a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. LG's offering is further rumored to feature a 2,700 mAh battery, while Huawei's phablet could pack a larger 3,500 mAh battery.

"We're rating the confidence level of the phone aspect of this rumor at a 7 out of 10. The source is reliable, and we believe the information to accurately represent the state of things in the very recent past. The specs on the phones are still tentative in the information we've received, though. They're probably further along now and things might have changed. The tablet rumor we're putting at an 8 out of 10. It's almost certain," Android Police notes.

Google has so far launched unveiled new Nexus devices in October, and is expected to stick to the same timeframe for new announcements this year. This means that the purported Nexus smartphones from LG and Huawei will not debut until the fall, and plenty of things can change until then.

As always with leaks, rumors, and reports, take everything with a grain of salt.
