Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi officially released the its biggest smartphone Mi Max on Tuesday, aiming to drive its smartphone sales.
Mi Max adopts 6.4 inches display, slight smaller than its competitor Huawei's 6.8 inches P8 Max, which CNET said the handset is two-handed affair, and "feels way too large". However, Xiaomi's Global Vice President Hugo Barra claimed the Mi Max is still "extremely pocketable."
The smartphone sports Snapdragon 650/ 652 processor, 3G/4G RAM, 32G/64G/128G ROM, 16-megapixel main camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It weighs 203g.
Speaking of the price, Xiaomi devices are always affordable. The basic model of Mi Max ( Snapdragon 650, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage) costs RMB 1,499($230), and the highest-end phone (Snapdragon 652, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage) costs RMB1,999 yuan ($350).
Mi Max runs MIUI 8, the latest operation system of the company, which introduces many new features, including Mi Lanting font, Power saving model, a fraud and spam detector for messages, and multi-window management solution.
The Mi Max will be available for buyers on May 17th in China.
Forbes said Mi Max shows Xiaomi is betting the phablets market will continue growing. Previously, research firm IDC suggested that Phablets will grow to 32% of all smartphone volumes by 2020, from 2015's 20%.
The International Business Times also reported the Mi Max launch is Xiaomi's latest effort to reverse a recent slowdown in sales. The report said Xiaomi had a hard time in smartphone sales in 2015, its smartphone sales also fell in Q1 2016 on year-on-year basis.
Further more, according to Reuters, Xiaomi's vice president last month claimed the company aims to double sales of smart home technology devices like rice cookers and air purifiers this year.
