Wait for New iPad or Buy Discounted iPad 2 Now?

Sandra Lei

With the launch of the new iPad on March 7, many are left wondering whether they should invest in the new device or would it be better to stick with the now discounted iPad 2. The new iPad does bring some cool new features onto the table, but it also falls short on some expectations.

When it comes to display, both the iPad 2 and the new iPad have a large 9.7-inch screen with HD capability. The new version, however, boasts a Retina display with a double resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at a pixel density of 264 pixels per inch (ppi), offering a million more pixels than standard HDTV. Still, the iPad 2 has an impressive display as well, with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and a pixel density of 132 pixels per inch. The iPad 2 has about half the resolution and pixel density of the new iPad, but it’s still better than many Android offerings. While the new version offers better viewing capabilities for HD movies, the iPad 2 is very good for standard definition videos and photos.

As for processing power, both the iPads run on dual-core 1GHz processor but the new iPad gets the performance boost from a quad-core A5X graphics chip. Graphic designers and enthusiastic gamers are the most likely to notice the significant difference, as the new iPad delivers enhanced performance across graphics applications, games and videos.

In terms of camera, the new iPad features a 5-megapixel camera that supports full HD 1080p video recording, while the iPad 2 supports 720p video capture at 30 fps (frames per second). Both tablets feature the same front-facing VGA camera for video calls. Battery efficiency is the same for both devices, but the new iPad’s battery will last less when using the 4G LTE network. The iPad 2 (16GB) will now retail for $399, while the new iPad will have a starting price of $499.
