The much awaited mobile game Pokemon Go finally hits American shores today.
Beta testers in the US who were chosen by game developer Niantic Labs can now get in on the Pokemon action, with the exclusive beta going live today. Niantic has started sending the invites to test out the game, and the feedback from the beta testers will be used to improve the final version ahead of its official launch date. The beta testing is currently in progress in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
Pokemon Go is an augmented-reality mobile game developed by Niantic Labs and the Pokemon Company. Today, the game developers have also revealed new information about the game. Endgadget reports that there will be over a hundred different Pokemon to capture. A notification will be sent to the player, or 'trainers', as Niantic calls them, whenever a Pokemon is near, and they would need to tap on their phone's touch screen to throw a Poke Ball. Poke Balls can be bought at Pokestops, or real-world monuments, historical locales, or public art installations.
Gyms are also an important feature in Pokemon Go. Trainers can take control of a gym by defeating the Pokemon defending them, until the gym's Prestige level drops to zero.
Trainers can also help Pokemon evolve, Niantic Labs said, and can also find Pokemon Eggs. These eggs can be hatched by walking a preset distance. Incubators are also provided to help hatch the eggs.
Niantic also pointed out on the blog that no one has seen a Venusaur yet during the beta testing. "Who will be the first field tester who catches or evolves their Bulbasaurs or Ivysaurs into Venusaur?" the development team asked.
There is still no announcement as to when the game will officially launch worldwide, but the Pokemon Go team is hard at work in making sure that everything will be smooth sailing once the final version of the game goes live.
