WWE 2K17: How Would the Brand Split Affect Future WWE Games?

Jazz Rosin

In a shock announcement this week, WWE has confirmed that Raw and Smackdown will be split into two completely separate entities.

Bleacher Report called this as WWE's most controversial and debatable decision in years. This may or may not have an effect on 2K Games' WWE video game franchise.

Fans could see two separate WWE titles in the future, comparable to Pokemon games. It will be huge blow to the consumers, who would need to choose between two titles, or but them both to get the best of both worlds. The choice will ultimately boil down to which WWE superstars go to which brand. The Women's Championship might be the only belt to go back and forth brands, Wrestling Inc. reported. The website went on to report that the United States Title will be on one show while the Intercontinental Title will be on the other. There's also been talk of having two sets of tag champions or one set that would work both shows. Fans would now need to determine which one is their favorite. Would they prefer Raw over Smackdown? Which titles would they like to win? Which brand has the better roster?

Profit-wise, 2K Games would seem to benefit from the show split, having the power to market two separate games at the same time. Nintendo had a huge success with the Pokemon franchise following the same formula, and Fire Emblem Fates has followed the same path with desirable results.

The split might not necessarily mean that two games would need to be produced, however. BitBag speculates that the split might pave the way for a new story mode about draft picks, and could be called WWE: Raw Vs Smackdown, with the two shows pitted against each other.

If there would be changes, fans would have to wait it out until after WWE 2K17 comes out. The newest WWE game is scheduled to come out this October.
