'Fallout 4: Far Harbor': DLC Framerate Issues on PS4
Jazz RosinPlaystation 4 owners have experienced a huge performance drop after the release of Bethesda's latest "Fallout 4" DLC, "Far Harbor".
Frustrated console owners have been complaining since last week that the game has suffered from persistent framerate issues following the update, with the game regularly dipping below 20fps, Playstation Lifestyle reported.
Digital Foundry's Thomas Morgan explains why the latest update performs poorly on the PS4.
"Fallout 4 usually targets 30fps on console, but a more aggressive use of a volumetric fog effect across Far Harbor's island triggers PS4 to cap this refresh at 20fps - with dips to 15fps at its extremes," Morgan said. "It's a thick layer of alpha transparency effects causing the issue, making any real-time targeting hugely difficult, something we noticed during an early woodland mission."
Morgan went on to say the PS4 is having more problems with the framerate than the Xbox One. "Xbox One suffers fluctuations up and down the scale and is far from ideal, but it's certainly Sony's machine that struggles most right now." Morgan confirmed.
The Microsoft console still does have its share of issues, Morgan reported. "We experienced a software lock-up while playing missions required to enable this expansion, plus the stuttering issues that have marred the experience since launch still have not been addressed."
Bethesda's Pete Hines confirmed that the fog is the reason for the console's poor performance. "We found some areas in beta where this happens and fixed. There are new areas players are finding. We will fix." Hines said on his Twitter account.
@da_asmodai we found some areas in beta where this happens and fixed. There are new areas players are finding. We will fix.

Bethesda has recently confirmed on their Twitter account that a fix is on its way, with a proposal already sent to Sony for approval.
We’ve submitted our update to Sony to resolve performance issues affecting some within Far Harbor. We will notify everyone when it’s live. — BethesdaGameStudios (@BethesdaStudios) May 28, 2016
The game developer also confirmed that the PS4 mod support is definitely pushing through, and is scheduled to go live next month.
