AMD's Radeon RX480 GPU Offers VR Experience for Less
Jazz RosinAMD is aiming to bring virtual capable-PC's to mid-range consumers with the new Radeon RX480. The Polaris architecture-based graphics card will start at a very low price of only $199 for the 4GB edition.
The tech company unveiled this surprising announcement at this year's Computex in Taipei. The Radeon RX480 promises to give not only a budget-friendly price, but a performance that can rival its more expensive competitors, PC Mag reports.
AMD hails its new GPU to be "the world's most affordable solution for premium PC VR experiences, delivering VR capability common in $500 GPUs," according to an official press release.
"As we look to fully connect and immerse humanity through VR, cost remains the daylight between VR being only for the select few, and universal access for everyone," Radeon Technologies Group's senior vice president and chief architect Raja Koduri said. "The RadeonTM RX Series is a disruptive technology that adds rocket fuel to the VR inflection point, turning it into a technology with transformational relevance to consumers."
AMD aims to penetrate the VR market and make the technology accessible to everyone. This will pave the way to more affordable VR-ready notebooks and desktops, providing a "catalyst" for the growth of the target market to 100 million consumers over the next four years.
Endgadget reports that the RX480 is capable of more than five teraflops of computing power. Comparing this to Nvidia's GTX1070's six teraflops and GTX 1080's nine teraflops, AMD's new GPU is still the best card for its value, something that Nvidia cannot compete with, unless the company considers lowering the prices of its own products.
Endgadget also points out that AMD has chosen the perfect market target, given that Nvidia has already cornered the high-end and mid-range markets with the GTX 1080 and 1070.
On the gamer side, Endgadget reports that the RX480 will also be able to run games smoothly. Id developers confirmed that the latest Doom remake was able to run with RX480. Users can also run two RX480 GPU's at the same time, giving high quality FPS at a lower cost.
The RX480 will be available on June 29th.
