'We Happy Few': A Terrifying Psycho-Thriller Game Set in the '60s
Jazz RosinMicrosoft has shown many games at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference. One of the games that caught many people's attention is psychological thriller, Compulstion Games' "We Happy Few."
The first gameplay demo was revealed at this year's Microsoft E3 briefing. The game is reminiscent of 2K Game's first-person shooter "Bioshock", according to Gamesradar, but on a more terrifying, nightmarish level.
The game takes place in Wellington Wells, a city in an alternate Great Britain in 1964, about thirty years after the Nazi occupation. In order to forget their situation and bring back happiness to their lives, the citizens invented a happy drug aptly named Joy.
In the demo, the protagonist decided not to take the drug anymore. His decision was followed by grave consequences, with people calling him a "Downer" and being chased by the citizens wherever he goes, and thus starts the protagonist's struggle to escape his fate at Wellington Wells.
The protagonist would need to find his escape route while surviving the horde of citizens and bobbies who are trying to get him back to his drug-induced happy life. In order to survive, the players would need to find food, water and a place to sleep.
The players should be able to deal with enemies through different tactics. They can either take small amounts of Joy to temporarily blend in with the other citizens, avoid being detected completely, or fight them head-on, according to Gamespot.
According to the developer's official website, when characters die in "We Happy Few," the game ends and players would have to start all over again. For each restart, the players will find themselves in a different city, due to the game's "procedural generation tech," allowing different ways of playing and high replayability.
An early version of "We Happy Few" was first shown at PAX East 2015 in February, followed by a Kickstarter campaign in June, earning 334,754 Canadian Dollars.
"We Happy Few" was originally heading to PC, but today game developer Compulsion Games announced that the game will also be released on the Xbox One. The game will be a Microsoft-exclusive title and will get an early access release on July 26.
