Jazz Rosin

The Nintendo 64 turned 20 this week. First launched in Japan on June 23, 1996, Nintendo's video game console was in high demand when it first went out. It sold a lifetime total of 5.54 million units in Japan, 20.63 million in the US and 6.75 million in other regions, selling an overwhelming 32.93 million units overall.

On its 20th anniversary, we'll go through the top five games for the N64, based on copies sold or shipped.

Top 5: Super Smash Bros. (5.55 million)

Nintendo's "Super Smash Bros." was released in 1999, and is the first game in the popular "Super Smash Bros." series.

The game has received mostly positive reviews from the media and was a smashing commercial success, selling 1.97 million copies in Japan and 2.93 in the US.

Top 4: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (7.6 million)

It will not be a Nintendo list without a "Zelda" title. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" is the highest-rating game on review-aggregating site Metacritic, getting a whopping critics' score of 99/100.

"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" is also considered by gamers and critics alike to be the greatest video game of all time.

Top 3: GoldenEye 007 (8.09 million)

Rare's shooter video game "GoldenEye 007," based on the 1995 James Bond film "GoldenEye," has pioneered features such as stealth elements and atmospheric single-player missions, a rarity in 1997 video games.

"GoldenEye 007" has received numerous accolades from various award-giving bodies such as BAFTA Interactive Entertainment and the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences.

Top 2: Mario Kart 64 (9.87 million)

It will come as no surprise that the top two spots will be taken by Nintendo's most lovable plumber. "Mario Kart 64" was released in Japan in December 1996 and in the US in February 1997.

The racing game was hailed as the 17th greatest Nintendo game of all time in 1999, according to the Official Nintendo Magazine.

Top 1: Super Mario 64 (11.89 million)

Taking the top spot is the 1996 platform video game "Super Mario 64." The game is included as a launch title for N64, along with "Pilotwings 64."

"Super Mario 64" received critical acclaim worldwide, and has received numerous "Game of the Year" nods from gaming media.
