'Civilization V': Take-Two Brings Strategy Game To North American High Schools

Publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that its historical strategy game "Civilization V" will be making its way into high school classes in North America starting next fall.

A modified version of "Civilization V," called "CivilizationEDU," will debut in schools next year, according to The Verge.

During the 13th Annual Games for Change Festival, Take-Two Interactive CEO and Chairman Strauss Zelnick announced the modified version of "Civilization V."

The publisher aims to encourage students to think critically and create historical events, and "evaluate the geographical ramifications of their economic and technological decisions."

"We are incredibly proud to lend one of our industry's most beloved series to educators to use as a resource to inspire and engage students further," Zelnick declared.

Take-Two and game developer Firaxis Games has teamed up with nonprofit game developer GlassLab to adapt the popular strategy game into an effective learning tool for students.

Teachers who will use "CivilizationEDU" will have access to an online dashboard to enable them to keep track of the students' progress. GlassLab will also add tutorial videos and lesson plans to the program. GlassLab is also responsible for SimCity EDU.

"Civilization has challenged millions of people around the world to revisit and experience history, pursue boldly exploration, and create their own societies based on their passions and freedom of choice," Take-Two's CEO proudly said. "I can't think of a better interactive experience to help challenge and shape the minds of tomorrow's leaders."

The creator of the "Civilization" series Sid Meier also expressed his full support for the project, saying that one of the secrets of the game is learning while you play. Players run into historical leaders, discover new civilizations and "learn valuable lessons from their success and failures in game."

"We're absolutely thrilled to be partnering with GlassLab and I am excited to see CivilizationEDU in classrooms next year," Meier said.

The next title in the "Civilization" franchise, "Civilization VI," will be launched on the PC on October 21. Check out the trailer for the new game below.
