'Vampyr' Mixes Action-RPG With Major Decision Making, Shares Similarities With 'Life Is Strange'
Jazz RosinDontnod Entertainment, the creators of the critically acclaimed game "Life is Strange," will be unveiling another adventure, "Vampyr."
This time, the setting is in London, based on the real-life flu pandemic that plagued the world in 1918. The story revolves around vampire doctor Jonathan Reid, who is torn between helping his patients and killing them to sustain his own thirst for blood.
At first glance, the game looks pretty much a standard vampire game. However, just like Dontnod's previous game "Life is Strange," the decisions made in this game will heavily influence the story.
Speaking to Playstation Lifestyle, lead project creators Grégory Szucs and Stéphane Beauverger points out that unlike "Life is Strange," players cannot rewind time to undo decisions.
"Yeah, there is no going back to previous states," Beauverger said. "Once you have killed one of the citizens, you have to deal with the consequences - just as in real life."
In "Vampyr," the players will decide which path to take, and enable them to rationalize their decisions.
"Each player will decide with his own attitude toward life about what (makes) someone good or someone bad," Beauverger said. "You will not be forced to kill, but everything in the game will incite you to do so, because you gain many more experience points when you kill someone."
As with Dontnod's first two games, "Remember Me" and "Life is Strange," "Vampyr" is all about questioning the player's decisions and actions, and living with its consequences, just like in real life.
Apart from the decision-making, the game will also incorporate standard action-RPG elements. Reid can wield improvised melee and ranged weapons to fight against other vampires, mutated vampires called "skulls" and vampire hunters.
Weapon upgrades can be made through crafting, and materials can be obtained by looting items from Reid's victims.
"Vampyr" will be launched on PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2017.
