Newest 'DOTA 2' Hero Monkey King Inspired By Wukong From 'League Of Legends'?
Jazz RosinValve introduced its newest addition to the "DOTA 2" lineup, Monkey King, which painfully resembles Wukong from "League of Legends."
The new character reveal was made after the end of play in The International 2016, Polygon reported. Both "League of Legends" players and "DOTA 2" fans cannot unsee the obvious resemblance between both heroes.
While the Monkey King is technically an original "DOTA 2" character, the concept is far from original.
As Lazygamer.net reported, the Monkey King concept has been used in so many other mainstream MOBA. "League of Legends" has Wukong, while "Heroes of Newerth" also has its own version of Monkey King.
Other MOBA games like "Strife," "Vainglory" and "SMITE" also has the same Monkey King- inspired heroes in their respective roster.
Interestingly, both the Monkey King in "DOTA 2" and "Heroes of Newerth" will be voiced by the same actor, Matthew Mercer.
For those who are not familiar with the legendary Chinese classic "Journey to the West," the Monkey King is based on the mythological figure Sun Wukong.
Sun Wukong's interesting lore may be the reason why so many heroes and characters are fashioned after him. Another popular character based on Sun Wukong is none other than the main protagonist of "Dragon Ball," Son Goku.
Valve has not released any specific information about Monkey King beyond the teaser trailer, and the developer has yet to divulge the new hero's abilities and stats.
However, Monkey King's old abilities from the 6.80 beta can be found on the "DOTA 2" Gamepedia, so this should be more or less what we can expect from the new hero. As seen in the video, his abilities might be similar to Phantom Lancer's.
The Monkey King will be joining the "DOTA 2" lineup this fall, along with the game's upcoming update called "The Journey."
