Is 'Pokémon GO' Just A Fad? Lack Of Content Spells Death For The Popular AR Game
J RoseThe augmented reality "Pokémon GO" was a worldwide phenomenon when it was launched in July, with millions of people downloading and using the app. However, it looks like the hype is slowly fading.
The number of "Pokémon GO" users has slowly decreased since its launch, and some who have kept on playing the game have already reached the level 30 cap. This has left people with nothing else to do in the game due to lack of content.
As with all mobile games, and even MMO's, lack of content always spells bad news for the game. Some mobile games have ended up shutting down because of this reason, as players continue to leave the game to look for other interesting titles.
Pokémon GO Hub compared "Pokémon GO" to Blizzard's popular MMO "World of Warcraft." The title received a lot of hype during its 2004 launch, with thousands of players logging in the servers during opening day.
The game has suffered from content drought after that, with many players leaving the game out of frustration, especially for those who have already reached the level cap. "Pokémon GO" is said to be going through the same phase, and unless Niantic Labs steps up, then more people will be abandoning the game.
Sensor Tower recently reported that "Pokémon GO" is no longer the top grossing iOS app in the US. The top spot is taken over by Supercell's "Clash Royale" after a 74 consecutive day streak.
It is also helpful to note that people have started leaving the game because of the game's broken tracking system, and with Niantic banning third-party app usage, players were left with no other options.
Niantic CEO John Hanke has promised more content in the future during his latest interviews and panels, but he has been frustratingly vague on when these changes will be coming. But will these announced changes turn the tide for "Pokémon GO"?
