'Overwatch' vs 'Dota 2': Which MOBA Game Is Better In The Long Run?

J Rose

Blizzard's "Overwatch" and Valve's "Dota 2" are two of the most popular MOBA games right now. How do they weigh against each other? Here we will compare the two MOBA giants to find out which one stands out.

Character Roster

Quantity-wise, "Dota 2" blows "Overwatch" out of the water with 112 characters to choose from, all readily available to use, without the need for microtransactions. "Overwatch" currently has 22 playable heroes, with another one, Sombra, hopefully on her way soon.

Both games have a diverse cast of characters, but "Overwatch" heroes are easier to play compared to "Dota2" heroes, which has a slightly steep learning curve to master.

Gameplay

"Overwatch" emulates a "Team Fortress" style, offering a more fast paced FPS gameplay than "Dota." "Dota 2," on the other hand, needs a bit of strategy, and goes beyond just knowing what skills your hero has.

Offline Mode

It could be a negligible point for some, but here's where we think "Dota" has an edge over its competitor: the game can be played both offline and online, while "Overwatch" needs Internet connection all the time.

E-Sports Scene

"Dota 2" has been in the e-sports scene for a long time, and still has one of the most active professional e-sports scenes in history. It also boasts the world's biggest e-sports tournament, with The International 2016 having a prize pool of more than USD$20m, and is so far the largest prize pool in the history of e-sports.

"Overwatch," on the other hand, has just started getting its grip in the e-sports scene, and with Blizzard handling the game, the FPS is sure to go high up the e-sports ladder soon. Whether or not it will be bigger than "Dota 2," however, is yet to be determined.

At the end of the day, "Dota" and "Overwatch" are both very different games, and have made a mark in the MOBA gaming scene in their own ways.
