'Skyrim' vs 'Skyrim: Special Edition' Review: Will The New Version Make You Want To Play The Game Again?

"Skyrim" is alive on the Internet once again thanks to the recently released "The Elder Scrolls VL Skyrim Special Edition," but at what level should players find the incentive to actually look back at the $60 game one more time?

"Skyrim" is one of the best RPGs that have graced the videogame scene, and a remaster is nothing but fitting. However, some may find it a bit hard to have a reason to obtain the special edition with the $60 price tag. What exactly does this include?

Based from IGN's review of "Skyrim Special Edition," the game got a major facelift with a number of improvements like better saturation, depth of field and generally prettier facade. However, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions may lack some expected features like 60 frames per second and huge performance boosts.

With the regular version of "Skyrim," especially on the PC, the same effect could somehow be achieved, though with a few number of limitations due to the lack of the 64bit workspace. Still, it gets the job done and more.

In short, "Skyrim Special Edition" is pretty much the same exact "Skyrim" that we've seen back in 2011, with pre-added features like prettier locations, lightings, faster loading times and not to mention, the complete DLC collection.

However, it still has the same dated looking character models, bugs and somewhat simplistic combat animation and mechanics that might not make it into today's standards. All these can be fixed and modified with the original "Skyrim" for the PC, given that this is the preferred platform to play the game with.

It may still take a wee bit of time for the PC version of "Skyrim Special Edition" to have decent number of mods that could take advantage of the 64bit engine, but for the mean time, the original "Skyrim" may still take the cake.

For those who want to see the game comparison in the flesh, the video below shows some footage from the vanilla "Skyrim Special Edition" and the original game with graphics enhancing mods.

"Skyrim Special Edition" can be obtained for free if the player has all the expansions and the game, but to those looking at the $60 price tag and still have the option for a PC version, a second-thought might be in order.
