JP

2016 has been a great year for Australian apps, and as 2016 comes to a close, the verdict as to what Aussie apps are the best has been made. Apple has just released its list of the cream of the crop in the list of products in the Australian Itunes and App store. Judged by the editors of the Aussie App store, Apple came up with the list of the best and most popular Aussie apps for 2016.

The best Aussie App for 2016 is Prisma. This app transforms ordinary photos and images captured with smartphones into a work of art ala Van Gogh, Picasso or in the style of other world renowned painters.

Among Aussies top apps and also one of the most used apps in Australia is Sweat with Kayla. The app was also named as the Apple Watch App of 2016.  Zova, awarded at the Worldwide Developers Conference as one of the winners of the coveted Apple Design Awards back in June, was ranked 9th in the top ten Best Apps of the Year.

Clash Royale was named as the Best Game of the Year. Pokemon Go, the addictive augmented reality game, is listed as the top free app of 2016 and also as the top grossing app of 2016. The game is said to have raked Niantic, the game's creator, a whopping $800 million revenue in in-app purchases alone despite unfavorable Pokemon Go reviews at the end of the year.

Majority of the top grossing apps in Australia were games save for the popular dating app, Tinder, and the music streaming app, Spotify. Facebook and its Messenger mobile messaging app both landed in the top 5 free apps in Australia.

Luke Graham's 7 years was hailed as the top song while Drake's Views edged out Justin Bieber's Purpose and Adele's 25 as album of the year. The popular TV show Game of Thrones bagged the 2016 best drama award.
