Despicable Me 3 Official Trailer: The Attack Of '80s Pop Culture [VIDEO]

The Despicable Me franchise is known for breaking stereotypes and unabashedly ignoring anything remotely sane, even choosing utter levels of ridiculousness over sensible plots. They may not be the first to try this, but they're certainly one of the few who managed to strike the perfect balance between mindless comedy and slapstick that's actually funny.

Despicable Me 3's official trailer just proved that they haven't lost their touch with the introduction of a new '80s pop culture-wielding villain. The trailer also gives us a closer look into the dynamic of Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) and Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wiig) as partners, both in crime-fighting and in domesticity. Two of "The Minions" were also shown in the trailer, manning what appears to be a DJ set in a beach bar shack. What they're doing there is anybody's guess, but it's pretty much their role in every movie, so it comes as no surprise.

Despicable Me 3, under Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, is looking to be a nod to the '80s --- with all two minutes and thirty seconds being dominated by a purple-clad dancing man with an obnoxious mullet and shoulder pads. Joining the cast is "South Park" creator Trey Parker, who will be lending his voice to Balthazar Bratt --- this installment's supervillain, whose ridiculous get-up could be a nod to Prince or Michael Jackson and whose hairstyle is a testament to the atrocious life choices prevalent in that period.

As mentioned earlier, Bratt wields the '80s pop culture --- just like a weapon and yes, it's no exaggeration. From exploding Rubik's Cubes, obnoxious bubble gum ballons, and moonwalking on water, Den of Geek describes his arsenal as deadly, but dated. A classic dance battle even ensues on a boat, complete with flashy white high-tops and moves reminiscent of disco and Jackson's hit "Thriller".

Despicable Me 3 is set to be released in June 30, 2017, but it already promises to be as much of a smash hit as the first two movies sharing its name. But of course, one can't judge a movie by its trailer only, so everyone will just have to wait and see.
