'Super Mario Run' Release News: Nintendo's New Side-Scroller Beats 'PokéMon Go' with Record First-Day Downloads
Charles LimNintendo's efforts in getting a piece of the mobile gaming market seems to have been a successful endeavor as their very first mobile game is now topping iOS charts. The company's side-scrolling, autorunner platform-based mobile game "Super Mario Run" now reportedly holds the record for having the most downloads during its launch day in the entire Apple App Store's history.
The brand new game is one of the few games a company has developed that was not meant for a Nintendo console. It is also the company's first foray into the mobile gaming market. According to reports, the game itself was apparently downloaded 2.85 million times in just 24 hours.
The game was launched for the iOS in the Apple App Store just a few days ago on Thursday. The number of downloads it had generated completely bested the downloads held by the previous record holder, "Pokémon Go". While "Pokémon Go" is still partly owned by Nintendo, "Super Mario Run," is still considered to be its very first mobile game as it directly came from its first-party list of titles.
"Pokémon Go" previously held the record with 900,000 downloads on its first day. However, the same report argues that the only reason it did not get as much downloads as "Super Mario Run" on its first day was because it was only available in a few countries during its launch. "Super Mario Run", on the other hand, was launched in 150 countries simultaneously, thus giving it a big advantage.
"Super Mario Run" was first announced by Nintendo at Apple's launch event back in September. It is now currently available for iOS, with a demo being offered for free. The demo will only give players access to the game's first three levels; after which, players must pay $9.99 to fully unlock the game. Nintendo previously announced that it was developing an Android version for the game that is set to be released some time in 2017.
