Samsung Business News: Samsung In Talks With LG; Galaxy Note 8 Possibly Coming With LG-Made Batteries
Charles LimSamsung Electronics has had a tough year this 2016, no thanks to the issues plaguing one of their high-end flagship smartphones: the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. The company has, of course, already taken steps to rectify the problem by initiating one of the biggest recalls in the company's history; but now, new reports are indicating that Samsung may have found another solution to prevent the problem from happening again.
According to The Investor, which cited an anonymous inside source, Samsung is currently in talks with LG to supply batteries for their next generation of smartphones. The company is also formulating deals with LG's battery business arm, LG Chem, to supply them with batteries in the coming years.
While the report did not exactly reveal which next-generation smartphones the batteries will be installed on, it is speculated that the deal may have something to do with the exploding battery issues on the Galaxy Note 7. Thus, it is highly likely that users will find an LG-made battery in Samsung's upcoming new Note device: the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Samsung currently has two other major suppliers, namely Samsung SDI and Chinese company ATL. Both companies had supplied Samsung with batteries for its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones; however, both variants containing their batteries were proven defective. Given the situation, it might be possible that Samsung would outright shift to another supplier with a proven track record in order to prevent another expensive catastrophe that might further damage their reputation.
The report also notes that LG and Samsung have yet to finalize a deal, but reaching an agreement should be very likely. LG has had no problems with their own batteries and has, thus far, been a reliable supplier for other big-name manufacturers. Samsung and LG also have a standing partnership in terms of displays, as LG is set to become their main supplier of LCD displays after Sharp's announcement that it would no longer be supplying panels starting next year.
